![]() Referred to as "the toughest fighter", she is the group's tough member and is easily enraged. In the 2016 reboot, her design slightly differs in that her hair also has a slight cowlick, which adds to her character and personality. Her special ingredient is spice and her signature color is light green. Buttercup also wears white tights and black Mary Jane shoes with her dress. She has lime green eyes and dresses in a lime green dress that has a black stripe in the middle of it. Initially I thought that Bliss was going to be the milestone for working towards the issue of diverse representation for cartoons but yet once again, Bliss was a character of color that was used to emphasize the pre existing, negative, stereotypes young black girls still have to live with today.Buttercup has short black hair in a flip with a small triangular part on her forehead. According to The Conversation, “ there’s a relationship between low self-esteem and negative media portrayals of racial groups” which can lead to confusion of a child’s identity and other negative effects that children do not need. My hopes for this blog post was to help applaud Cartoon Network for jumping on the diversity bandwagon but going further into it, I realized how they failed to recognize the importance of their relationship to their diverse audience. This helps to continue the stereotype of how women of color grow up in broken homes and are unwanted since they are too much trouble but also constantly seek for emotional affirmation in unhealthy ways. The professor never went looking for her. Bliss was the only who one grew up on an island by herself and to add damage. Even though she was the only powerpuff girl who has grown up onĪn island by herself, she is the only one who calls the professor, “daddy.” The other powerpuff girls spent their whole lives around the professor and he is practically their father but the always managed to address him as professor. This stereotype is often portrayed in other forms of media but I think its more dangerous how it is now being shown in a children’s cartoon.Īnother stereotype that was very prevalent was Bliss’s daddy issues. I think it is sad that the first character of color on the show, has to have an attitude problem that suggests how people of color cannot deal with their emotions in a healthy way. In my opinion, this emphasizes the “angry black girl” stereotype since this characteristic was not necessary in any way. Her emotional instability is so bad that she chose to run away to deserted island for ten years. So basically, Bliss is illustrated to be the perfect child but has severe emotional instabilities. Years ago before the original powerpuff girls, Bliss was the Professor’s only daughter he made with the chemical W, which made Bliss very powerful since she possessed powers that the other powerpuff girls did not have.Īs a child, Bliss did not know how to control her emotions and would frequently have temper tantrums that resulted in her accidentally destroy everything in her sight by using her powers. The plot behind Bliss and how she comes into the show is very problematic to start with. The new character, Bliss was revealed during an hour special episode and after watching the whole episode, I sadly ended up asking myself “what is this nonsense?” I recognized Cartoon Network’s attempt to diversify their representations of the show’s character but this was simply not the way to do it. I have always been a fan of the Powerpuff Girls since I was a little girl and I think Cartoon Network’s choice of adding a Powerpuff Girl of color was an interesting way of acknowledging little girls like I was who could find the show more relatable. ![]() At first it did not make sense to me but eventually the excitement grew since I solely started to focus on this new character. Knowing this, you could imagine my reaction when first hearing about the series adding on another sister who is of color. ![]() The sisters live with their single father, the “professor”, who is known for creating the young girls through a science experiment. The Powerpuff Girls is an animated series about three young, white, sisters who use their super powers to fight against local crime. Now being interested in the show, Iq gained a lot of curiosity as to how Cartoon Network was going to execute this character. However, the announcement of the new mysterious character of color got my attention. Ild, the reboot series failed to acquire my interest since many changes have taken place. Along with the three main girls: Blossom, Bubble, and Buttercup, they would now be accompanied with an older sister… who happens to be one of color.Įven though I watched the Powerpuff Girls class as a ch In 2016, Cartoon Network announced that the Powerpuff Girls were adding a new character to the show.
